"Wake up houses" initiative was established in December 2014 during direct action supporting Prague´s squat "Klinika" that was at that time evicted by police, highlighting the issue of empty houses in the Czech Republic. The motivation initiating its creation was to highlight the issue of empty houses and their social, cultural and political importance, to look at alternative approaches to housing, especially in its radical form (squatting) as well as networking with other initiatives taking various approaches to (not) housing from the official and widely accepted ones to civil disobedience and illegal approaches. Our group consists of activists, students, and people of various professions, people with housing and without housing. Our aim is continuous mapping of empty houses in Ostrava and the enlivening of one of them in order to use it for our activities (autonomous and social centre, activism, political activities, hostel run by homeless people). During 2015 we organized a couple of events - demonstration, lectures and discussions, cultural events for local people sympathizing with this concept. Currently we are looking into uncovering a case connected with privatization and machinations with housing stock that led many people into circumstances of uncertain housing, and generally pointing out to lack of decent housing for many in contrast to the many empty houses available.
